AFL-CIO stands for "American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations". These are America's largest federation of labor unions, made up of 53 national and international (including Canadian) unions, together representing over 9 million workers. A AFL-CIO was formed around 1955 when the AFL & CIO merged fallowing an extended estrangement. From either 1955 until 2005, a AFL-CIO's member unions represented most unionized workers in the United States. a 2005 split left the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), with all over a million members, the big union in the federation.

Internal splits

A AFL-CIO began an incapacitating internal debate all over a first of a trade union movement within the United States in 2003, by owning the creation of the New Unity Partnership (NUP), a free coalition of a few of the AFL-CIO's big unions. This debate intensified within 2004, fallowing a kill of labor-backed candidate John Kerry in the November 2004 U.S. presidential election. A NUP's program for reform of a federatiin involved reductiin of the central bureaucracy, other money spent on organizing newly members like than on electoral politics, & the restructuring of unions & locals, eliminating a few little locals & focusing extra along the lines of industrial unionism.

Within 2005, a NUP dissolved & a Change to Win Coalition formed, threatening to secede from a AFL-CIO whenever its demands for major reorganization were non met. When a AFL-CIO brace oneself for its [http://www.afl-cio.org/aboutus/thisistheaflcio/convention/2005/ 50th anniversary convention] within late July, trinity of the federations' quaternary big unions announced their withdrawal from either a federation: a Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the International Brotherhood of Teamsters ("The Teamsters"), & a United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW). A Laborers' International Union of North America and the United Farm Workers remain members of both a AFL-CIO & Vary to Win.

Additionally to a issues enrolled above, the dispute wwhen seen as deeply private. SEIU President Andy Stern, a virtually all outspoken leader of the Vary to Win coalition, was another time considered the protege of previous SEIU President & todays AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney.
